Special Needs Students
The Catholic school recognizes the beauty and potential inherent within each student. In an effort to foster continued growth, the school embraces the challenge to provide assistance and programs to serve students with special needs according to the resources available within/to the school. Parents are considered an integral part of the process.
In order to accommodate a student who has been evaluated for special learning needs, parents are obligated to share educational/psychological testing results and any resulting plan with the school. A student may be admitted on a probationary basis with dates and criteria of evaluation clearly established in writing.
If a student has a documented disability, a copy of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Individualized Services Plan (ISP), 504 plan, and/or Student Assistance Plan (SAP) should be maintained in the student’s confidential file. Students who have a documented disability but do not qualify for services through the local public school may be eligible for accommodations through a Student Assistance plan written at the Catholic school. The refusal to provide such information is a condition for negating enrollment in the school.
Students with disabilities are expected to follow the school’s policies and honor code.
Learning Resource Program
A Learning Resource Program is available which provides an educational alternative for children with mild to moderate learning disabilities. Information regarding the program is available in the Nativity School Office.
Nativity School students may receive testing services through Fairfax County Public School Program or private institutions. The principal and teachers may request that parents seek testing for their child through the school system or private agencies. Public schools provide the testing services at no charge for residents of that locality. Students who are tested privately may be eligible for reimbursement through their insurance programs.
Teachers at Nativity Catholic School recognize that all children learn differently and that some may require accommodations. Teachers will make reasonable accommodations as determined by the Individual Education Plans (lEPs) and/or 504 Plans and will strive to accommodate students with minimal special needs. The school requires a copy of the test results and the IEP or 504 Plan to be kept in the student’s confidential file.
Records, which include documentation of students’ needs, are confidential and will be kept in separate files. Such records remain the property of the student’s parents and may be removed at any time. Confidential records will only be released after the school has received a written statement from the parents and/or court subpoena.
Nativity Catholic School will partake in government programs available to non-public schools.
