Attention third, fourth, and fifth-grade girls:
Do you love science and fun experiments?
Do you enjoy hanging out with friends?
If your answer is YES!, then Jr. G.E.M.S. Club (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) is for YOU!
Jr. G.E.M.S. is an after-school club for 3rd, 4th and 5th-grade girls, where we design experiments, learn about the awesome world of science, and have a lot of fun as well.
We will meet about once each month, by grade on Thursdays after school, from dismissal until 4:15pm, in the Makerspace STEM lab.
And parent volunteers are always welcome and highly appreciated as we do a bunch of fun STEM things in a very short time! (Virtus required!)
If you are interested in joining and can commit to one meeting a month for the rest of the school year, please send in your Parent Permission form. Students must have a permission form turned in to be allowed to stay after school. Forms are available in the electronic Wednesday folder.
Questions? Ask Mrs. Smith at GEMS@nativityschool.org.
One question I often get, and I appreciate, is concerning why an all-girls group? The organization that started GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science) has been working since 1994 to increase interest in STEM for girls in elementary and middle school and to expose girls to the fun and wonder of these fields.
“A recent study of fourth graders showed that 66 percent of girls and 68 percent of boys reported liking science. But something else starts happening in elementary school. […] The persistence of the stereotypes start to turn girls off, and by eighth grade, boys are twice as interested in STEM careers as girls are.” (National Science Foundation (NSF), 2007)
